There's a New Baby Coming! Books

Do you have a new baby coming to your house? Here are some favorite books to share with toddlers and preschoolers about a new sibling. And there are some favorite board books to share with the new baby when they arrive.

Alaskan Books

Reading about Alaska is a great way to learn more about our state while enjoying a good story. This list includes picture and chapter book suggestions.

Classic Family Readalouds

Are you looking for a great book to share with your children? Here are some great, time tested favorites, that are sure to be a hit with the whole family.

Beginning Chapter Books

When children are comfortable enough with reading to move into beginning chapter books (after beginning readers), you will find these books a great place to start. Children in this stage do especially well with series books. The familiar plots and characters allow them to build speed and confidence in their reading. Most children transition to beginning chapter books in second or third grade.

Graphic Novels
Comics and graphic novels are great for choices for readers of all ages. This section has suggestions for grades K-8. 

Newbery Award Winners

The Newbery Medal, named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery, is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Caldecott Award Winners

The Caldecott Medal, named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott, is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Juvenile Series and Sequels

(External Website) The 'Juvenile Series and Sequels' database contains over 36,000 books in 4,900 series titles that are classified into three audiences:

  • Juvenile Easy [JE] – for birth through 2nd grade readers
  • Juvenile [J] – for 2nd through 6th grade readers
  • Young Adult [YA] – for 6th through 12th grade readers

Reading Beoynd: Books for Advanced Readers

(External Website) Is your child an advanced reader? This is a list from the American Library Association and the Children's Book Council that features 75 challenging and age-appropriate books for children who read at an andvanced level (2 or more years beyond grade level).
